Wrath of Kings Battle Report 1: Part 1

By May 9, 2015July 26th, 2019Battle Reports, Miniatures Games, Videos

I am the wrath of God. Who else is with me?

The battle reports are back! Will and I go dice to dice over a game of Wrath of Kings and some brand new terrain.

Here it is folks! After an outrageously long hiatus, Will is back to take his place on the opposite side of a gaming table from yours truly, and the two of us put Wrath of Kings by CMON through its paces. It was way back in 2013 that the two of us backed this Kickstarter campaign, and here we finally are with two fully painted factions (the Nasier and the Goritsi) and some brand new terrain on which to field them.

The good news is, Wrath of Kings is great fun, and all the long hours of painting were not in vain. I’m looking forward to tackling another faction, as is Will. Next time I’ll be painting the Hadross, while he puts colour to the Teknes.

In the meantime, enjoy this new battle report. The second and final part will be posted very soon!

Enjoyed the video. Yes, the Rathor: looks very cool but has only 1 d10 for his spell. So much for powerful spellcaster. The Skorza are a pain but they can be taken down.

Love your new terrain table. Am envious (and inspired) although will not be able to build one myself any time within the next 4 months as I will be on the road but will certainly start when I’m settled back home again later this year.

Just re-watched the video again as I thought there was something wonky about the Motivations the first time round I watched.

Around minute 14:33 when the Howl revealed the objective. If it’s interacting on Turn 3, it’s probably Burn It Down for the Nasier. The Motivation card says: “Objectives in this scenario are 50mm bases that are size 3, Impassable, and cannot be attacked.” Note the Impassable keyword? 😉

(Unless I missed something there, which is all to possible).

    • You’re spot on CK, and we obviously completely forgot that in the heat of battle! I’ll have to make up some appropriate bits of terrain for objectives like that.

Haha. I’ve had that exact same
Motivation in several games and I’ve always not been happy how to maneuver about 10 troops around the darn ‘Impassible’ objective markers. 🙂

Hmmm, needed to read Peter’s scenario setup card a little more carefully… I fear the Goritsi may have had a few extra figures move in some of those combined moves, but heck, it’s a new rules system!

  • Just for clarification on the replacing icons on the card. You don’t get to pick the dodge that gets replaced. It would be the highest numbers dodge. In this instance it didn’t matter but as a clarification to those watching, the rules are the highest dodge so had UH rolled a 3 and 4 those would still dodge as the 5 would be the highest dodge and would be the one that changed to a hit.

Also thanks for the Battle Report. Fun to see it played on your new board. I was really hyped into building one until Video 3 lol. You scared me away with that video.

    • Excellent point Chris, thanks for making it – I’d completely forgotten that rule.

Keep in mind that a lot of video 3 was mostly me fixing mistakes I’d made in the first videos! Hopefully so you don’t have to make them. From now on I’d definitely attach the foam and wood together in sheets and then have them cut accurately and professionally with a table saw.

  • Will Belford says:

Chris, be not faint of heart, proceed with your terrain, you can get away with half as much dry-brushing as Universal Head! As you will have noticed from his rules summaries, his attention to detail and quality is unsurpassed, he’s a psychologist’s poster-child for obsessive-compulsive behaviour (only in gaming-related matters I must stress).

I was going to suggest that he put together some sort of one-page summary of all the observations in those three videos, a little piece of ‘instructional design’ to summarise what you SHOULD do, as opposed to what mistakes to avoid. Terrain Recipe: tools, ingredients, steps, “and here’s one I prepared earlier.”

    • I’m glad you clarified it’s only in gaming matters Will. I don’t obsessively fold my clothes and put them in colour order on the shelves or anything… 🙂

Oh, and thanks for coming up with yet more work for me – you’d think weeks of filming and editing would be enough! 🙂 Seriously though, there’s no one right way to built terrain, and there are many different techniques out there. The idea was just to share how I approached it, mistakes and all (much like our battle reports).
