The Joy of Unboxing: Journey: Wrath of Demons

The nature of Monkey was irrepressible!

Unboxing a Kickstarter copy of Journey: Wrath of Demons.

It’s been quite a while since this successful Kickstarter campaign closed – November 2013 in fact – but finally this big box of goodies is in my hands. And the box contains some incredibly impressive plastic miniatures, some of the best I’ve ever seen in fact.

(Just as an aside, is anyone else getting annoyed by the increasing tendency lately for boardgames to have double-barrelled names? Seriously, let’s not follow movies and video games into this ridiculous practice. Pick ‘Journey’ or ‘Wrath of Demons’, not both! End of nitpic …)

Wow, the minis are indeed breathtaking.

Those miniatures look absolutely splendid as do the map tiles.
The rules book also seems a cut above the normal too.
I can’t wait to see the minis painted and a play through video.

I agree on the naming business. Save the double barrel names for the expansions not the main game.

I love miniature games, I own a LOT of them. I agree the minis in this game are gorgeous, however I dislike them on a functional level. They are too big – and yes, thats a detriment. They don’t fit well on the boards, they spill over into adjacent squares making side by side alignment clunky and fiddly.

I really wish they had used 28mm scale or even 30mm scale so I could use them in some of my other mini games as well. Unfortunately, this is the only minis game I have in 45mm or 54mm or whatever scale these are supposed to be, the scale does seem to slide around a bit.

Hopefully the game play will be compelling enough to overcome my dislike of the scale. 🙂

    Peace

    • I haven’t played the game yet Brent, but I know what you mean, they do seem more like collector’s pieces than playing pieces. I haven’t actually checked by the bases shouldn’t be bigger than the squares on the boards, as this game is quite precise with its facing and there’s a lot of close combat. The custom square bases would make them difficult to use for other games too.

But then again, you could slap some of those big demons down on another game and scale wouldn’t be an issue! 🙂
