The Joy of Unboxing: Stronghold 2nd Edition

You are no more a king than the boil on my arse!

The EOG lays siege to a new copy of Stronghold 2nd Editionby Portal Games and Stronghold Games. Once more unto the shrinkwrap, dear friends!

Another game that’s been on my radar for some time is Stronghold by Ignacy Trzewiczek – the designer of the excellent Robinson Crusoe, a game I really must play more often. This second edition, produced with the help of the appropriately-named Stronghold Games, has finally joined my collection.

It’s a relatively involved and detailed affair with asymmetrical play, a lot of decisions, and a hell of a lot of wooden cubes. Does it capture the tension and violence of a real castle siege? How would I know, I’ve never been in one, thank heavens! But it does look like fun. Join me as I unbox the box and have a look inside at all the cardboard and wooden bits.

I’m really interested to hear what you think of the game after playing it; I was very tempted by the original edition, held out, and am now wondering whether the second edition is a good excuse to take the plunge or not.

One of the best (2 player) games I have played. The only thing that bugs me a little ittle bit is that the game is a “bit” mathy. You constantly have to count enemy orcs, trolls and goblins and compare their strenght to your own marksmen, soldiers and veterans. Plus hourglasses.

    • I agree, and in fact at the end of our first game we purposely didn’t get right into doing all the pre-calculation necessary to make the final turn decisions. It was more fun to just do our best and see how it turned out. Euro-gamers would likely have a conniption at such laxness, but it made for a far more entertaining finish when I tallied up my final wall section and found the points were equal, cheered at my victory, then was reminded by my opponent that I actually needed to exceed his total to win! 🙂

Hahaha. And here I thought you were chafing at the bit to do an unboxing video for 7 Sins 😀
