There’s a thing called chit clipping which hardcore wargamers do – either with nail clippers or a special corner-clipping machine you can buy. It involves clipping off the corners of square chits. Here’s an article I found about it.
As for sleeving, it’s definitely a personal choice; some swear by it, some don’t like it. I do it very occasionally for games with decks that see heavy use (eg LCGs, Arctic Scavengers)
