The Joy of Unboxing: Hunt for the Ring

Swords were naked in their pale hands; helms were on their heads.

From Ares, the makers of War of the Ring comes Hunt for the Ring – let’s unbox a copy!

Yes, you all know I love War of the Ring – in fact I played it again just a couple of nights ago – so it was very exciting when I received the new game from Ares, Hunt for the Ring. This takes the episode in The Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo and his hobbit companions journey from The Shire to Bree and thence to Rivendell, pursued by Nazgûl, and turns it into a hidden movement game of two episodes.

I’m a fan of Fury of Dracula and Letters From Whitechapel, and this one looks to be another excellent entry in the hidden movement genre. I won’t know for sure until it hits the table, but in the meantime let’s check out at the lovely contents of the box, shall we? Bagginsesssss ….

From what I recall, only five Nazgul were chasing them and the other four were waiting at the fords of Bruinen. As it appears the game only covers from the Shire to Rivendell, it makes sense there are only five Nazgul.

Been a while since I read the books, so I could be wrong.

Glad to see it in your collection. It’s a beautiful game, but is – due to its type – VERY different in feel to WotR or Bo5A.

And yes, not all Nazgul were directly involved in the direct search for Frodo most of the time. They were all there at the Fords of Bruinen at the end though.

    • Hey Ralf, while you’re here, let me ask you – how do you find Warriors of Middle-Earth? We tried it for the first time the other day and found it tricky to use and the extra faction deck card management a bit fiddly. At the end we concluded it needs a lot more study before we use it again to make sure we use it properly. What are your thoughts? And what’s your standard game – WotR alone, with Lords, or with Lords and Warriors?

I agree that WoME can get a bit fiddly – it does produce some awesome alternative stories though, and I found it quite well balanced in the end. I have not actually played it much after playtesting though; nowadaways I tend towards the base game when I play WotR.

That’s the thing with such beautiful designs as the original game. While you can add more Chrome to it, it doesn’t usually improve the game experience, just varies it. And if you don’t play WotR that often, variation is not what you’re looking for.
