BattleLore 2nd Edition Painting Tutorial: Part 1

By October 18, 2014July 26th, 2019Battle Reports, Boardgames, Figure Painting, Videos

Rejoice with great gladness! Great gladness!

Let’s take on the 92 plastic figures in a box of BattleLore 2nd Edition, armed only with a tattered paintbrush and a strong will to succeed.

There hasn’t been a miniatures painting tutorial on the Esoteric Order of Gamers for a little while, so it’s time again to get out those paints and paintbrushes and tackle a big project: and BattleLore 2nd Edition is the mighty challenge for today!

Despite vowing to myself that I wouldn’t get the second edition (after spending an unconscionable amount of hours painting the base game and expansions of 1st edition, not to mention Battles of Westeros and some of its expansions) I of course yielded to my incessant game-buying impulse voice-in-my-head and got it. And once I’d got it, I had to paint it!

This is just a two-parter, so I’ll be moving at speed through some of the techniques I used to paint this big lot of figures relatively quickly (though of course, my penchant for perfectionism gets the better of me here and there).

A BattleLore 2nd Edition rules summary is, of course, in progress!

Thanks for this article. I am about to have a go at painting these figures myself so i found it very helpful. Have you done the large chaos lord and or eagle yet? I might do the cavalry in metallic silver as a base coat so i can just pick out the larger areas in a blue rather than painting blue and picking out the small yellow areas as i am not experienced at all in painting.

Looking forward to the second part.

    • Hi John. Yes, I’ve done the whole set and this series will be wrapped up with part 2, which is coming today or tomorrow. You’re idea is a good one, as those fine trims can be a bit of a pain. In fact if you can’t be bothered to do them you could just leave out the trims altogether. These are just suggestions and you certainly don’t have to follow my paint schemes. Good luck and glad I could help!

Hi, great videos, not just the tutorials, also the gameplay/review ones.
I’m also going to paint battlelore with expansions, so buckle up myself? 🙂
I wanted to ask you, this is my first attempt, I have almost everything figure out except for what colors should I buy for this project, since I have to buy all the materials you can imagine that will start to add up.. So what colors should I buy? I want to copy the cards art as well, so pretty much what you did, could you help me out? Thanks!!

    • I get asked this a lot – in fact someone asked me in the YT comment for this video. One thing I find frustrating about Games Workshop these days is that they encourage new painters to follow exact colour painting guides, thus taking out some of the creativity of painting (and encouraging painters to buy more of their paints than are necessary – when you’re starting you don’t need to buy a lighter shade of blue to highlight, when adding a bit of white to your existing blue will work fine).

You don’t need someone to give you a list of exact colours (and I couldn’t anyway, I painted these two years ago). Just buy a yellow you like, a blue you like, etc, from whatever paint range you want to use (GW, Vallejo, Army Painter etc) and have fun with it! Have a look at the videos and work out which basic colours you need. Or buy a starter set of basic colours. There’s no ‘right’ way.
