The Joy of Unboxing: Necromunda Underhive

Can you count, suckers? I say, the future is ours… if you can count!

Games Workshop brings back Necromunda, an old favourite … but in pricey bits.

It’s no secret around these parts that Necromunda is one of my favorite old Games Workshop games, one I thought they’d brought back with Shadow War: Armageddon, that very short-lived skirmish system that concentrated more on Warhammer 40,000 factions rather than gang war. But I was wrong! Here’s another game, this time called Necromunda: Underhive, that brings back the gangs (Goliath and Escher are featured). But wait! Just to confuse you further, it’s played on flat cardboard tiles. Hold on! You’ll have to pay another NZD$50 to get Gang War,the slim paperback volume of 3D terrain and campaign rules. You know, the stuff that made Necromunda, well, Necromunda.

This kind of ‘parcel it out in highly priced bits’ marketing strategy annoys me. The Gang War rules should have been included in the boxed set. As should the extra strategy card decks – a total of 40 cards that cost another NZD$54 to buy. So really, to get the entire Necromunda experience here, you have to pay NZD$259. And the Gang War book only covers the Goliath and Escher gangs, so they’ll be more expensive spoonfuls to come for the other gangs.

Whinging aside, this is a nice enough production, though I’m not impressed with the tile artwork. The figures are excellent, and they’ve crammed a lot of variety into a single sprue for each gang (you get two identical sprues for each gang). I haven’t read the rules yet, but they’re apparently a mix of old Necromunda and new Warhammer 40,000.

Worth getting? If you have the old game, probably not – though you may want to pick up the new gang figures separately.

  • Wow, I thought having to buy the core box and Gang Wars was bad enough. Having to also buy cards and having it only cover two gangs is insane. Guess I’m out. Anyone know if Scrappers is any good?

I ordered the same as you, Core Box and Gang book. Never played the original, or 40K, so this is a new experience for me.

I had assumed that the extra card decks were just duplicates of what is in the core box, so that people just wanting the gangs can buy cards plus figures.

I’ll probably have to label the miniatures in some way to match them to their stat cards, or maybe I’ll print my own cards with images of the painted minis. For simplicity, I’m just going to build them as detailed in the core rules I think.

    • You only get 4 unique cards for each gang in the box set, and the gang card sets come with 8 unique gang cards, 12 general cards, and 6 blank cards. They’re all new cards.

Yeah, I’m just building them as suggested. I don’t have time for experimenting with my own mods these days!

Sadly this is not new…and despite making great minis…the rest does not hold up to the “good old days” 🙁 With Shadespire they take this over the top with a trading card element added…learning from FFG´s succsess with the likes of X-wing I asume.

  • As always with these new games its better to wait to see how it goes. I never preorder. I can always get 2nd hand stuff if it does take off and not regret the money spent. And it seems I can wait as they’re trickling out releases of new gangs and books – 1 every quarter ! ☹️the price in NZD! I’m in Canada so it’s almost the same. I know Deadzone isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but you got a lot for your buck with that starter box! Thanks again for the unboxing

I’m thinking of using Deadzone scenery for 3D version of Necromunda, once I get a few 2D games done and that’s after I get the miniatures assembled… which will be right after I finish with WWX…

And soon Mythic Battles will arrive… I’ll put off painting that as long as possible… daunting.

The Legacy Gangs are available at https://necromunda.com

Just scroll down to ‘Useful Downloads’ and your precious ‘Delaque’ (plus three others) are all yours… along with some extra weapons.

Had a skim of Necromunda rules and the setting looks interesting. Has potential as an RPG with PC’s starting as new gangers and being promoted through the ranks.
