It’s all very well cutting nice neat pieces of foamcore out, but how do you stick the damn bits together? Fear not! The Esoteric Order of Gamers comes once again to your rescue with Part 2 of this video series detailing the manipulating of this innocent material to serve your own dastardly ends. Love that you are doing foamcore insert plans. I have made a few inserts in the last few months and I can’t wait to see what games you post designs for.

One additional technique I’ve used on foamcore projects in the past is to slide those pins in at quite an angle rather than straight in. I usually put one pin near either end of a piece with each angled in toward the center. Theoretically, this helps keep the pieces snugged together a little more, preventing any separation which straight-in pins might allow to just slide apart a bit.

It may be unnecessary; I didn’t adopt this technique after having a problem with separation or anything like that. It just struck me as a sensible precaution from the outset.

Thanks for that tip m1ke, always good to hear how other people do these things. BTW I usually take the pins out after the box has dried as it just seems neater, but I’m sure some would prefer to keep them in for extra strength.

Yeah, I also take the pins out after drying.

BTW, I forgot to mention in my first comment that I love these box-organizer plans you’re putting out. Excellent work! Can’t wait to see more of them, although after watching your 3rd video I may just try using your methodology to plan out a few of my own, and see if I can squeeze in some expansion components into the main box for a game or two.

When I use pins, sometimes after it’s dried the pins are nearly impossible to get out because they’ve been glued in. Any suggestions, such as pin placement or types of pins?

    • Universal Head says:

Strangely enough I’ve made countless boxes and never had this problem. Try the ‘sharp’ side of a pair of clippers (the kind you use to clip plastic figures off sprues) to get a grip and then pull them out (don’t cut them). But really, using a fingernail should do the trick to get under the head of the pin and then pull it out of the foam. I use normal dressmaker’s pins.

Awesome videos – any thoughts on hot glue (low temp) ?

  • rodrigor says:

Hot glue is great! I aways use it.
