The Joy of Unboxing: Mousquetaires du Roy

By November 7, 2017August 28th, 2019Boardgames, Unboxing, Videos

By now Richelieu, without the slightest question, knows even the color of your underpants.

One for all, and all for one – let’s all open a copy of Mousquetaires du Roy by Ystari/Rio Grande.

Alexandre Dumas’ story Les Trois Mousquetaires seems an excellent subject for a boardgame, but apart from this game, Mousquetaires du Roy, there are very few out there. So I’ve been looking at this one for a while, though I was turned off a bit by the amateurish graphic design (it seems to be a theme lately – I wasn’t impressed by Inis either. Perhaps I mentioned it a few too many times in this video though – for that I beg your forbearance, as I am a graphic design myself and it’s a subject close to my heart.

This semi-cooperative (‘one vs many’) game has had good reviews despite the visual flaws, and I’m looking forward to a bit of 17th century-themed swashbuckling. In the meantime, let’s take a rapier to the shrink wrap and look inside!

I found that game a couple of years ago in a shop called ‘The Works’ for less than £10. I was intrigued by the game and thought I could use the miniatures for an RPG. Never actually got to play it as it seemed a bit… crap… if the rules were anything to go by and several times I was on the verge of junking it and just keeping the miniatures… but it’s still in the cupboard… and I haven’t used the miniatures… yet!

Not the first Ystari game I picked up, but they don’t look impressive. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of Roy’s Musketeers 🙂

Never would have thought, looking at someone unpacking a game could be this much fun! Bravo! Top notch!

The enthusiasm in cutting, ripping the shrink (I always fear for your gamebox. I use a fingernail. When I at last, “unshrink”), the tossing aside of components after a short, tightlipped evaluation.
And, to top it off, the comments.
“Ah, some manuals.. in a plastic bag” RIPPP “aha,” ShuffleShuffle, “ah”, TOSS. “And some counters” WIGGLYWIGGLY. TOSS “At least the game could be fun.”

And here: pure gold your comments on the graphic design. I remember being on the fence for this one, also being enemaured, enemoured, enamoured by the theme and being SO dissapointed with the graphics.

But you tell it wonderfully. Your disdain. The french! 😀

And in the expansion one with the Kemet and Cyclades expansion, too. Ha! The Joy! The Dissapointment! Spot on! The nice graphics there!
And us, at the hands of our gamey addiction! Gotta have it all (but, alas, mine are still in shrink).

    • Great comment Sternberg, glad you enjoy my particular style. I can tell you often choose to reel back my natural cynicism when I film these things, but perhaps I should let it rip! 🙂

The gameplay is supposed to be good. Do not know about the graphic design, though. 😀
